Happy Mornings: How To start Your Day The Right Way
By consciously creating happy mornings, you are choosing how you want the rest of your day (and life) to unfold.
Recently, I began to self-study Ayurveda, an ancient holistic approach to health. What intrigues me about this approach is that it combines our emotional, mental, and physical health as a whole instead of dissecting the mind, body, and overall lifestyle into some separate parts of a human experience.
In one of the books, the author dedicates a big part of the chapter to how we start our days and create happy mornings (this is a definition I came up with).
Although we often hear about morning routines and probably have one, we can go a step further to start creating happy mornings from the time we open our eyes.
As I began learning Ayurveda, one thing that stood out for me was this: if we intentionally create mornings which reflect joy, happiness and positive intentions, we create happier and more peaceful days. When we feel happy and at peace, our approach to emotional healing and handling day-to-day situations changes. And through these subtle, simple steps, we won’t only feel good, but also process and handle our emotions more effectively.
So, if you are on a healing path, this is yet another approach or a tool you can use to support your mental, emotional, and even physical well-being.
Here are 4 powerful ways how to create happy mornings
1. When you open your eyes
The moment you open your eyes, your thoughts flood your mind. If you are not conscious, you will start thinking about your to-do list, errands you have to run, the presentation at work, stuff you have to take care of regarding your family, etc.
Instead, allow yourself to create a happier morning by consciously focusing on one thing you are grateful for.
Place your hands on your chest, take a deep breath, and ask yourself,
“What is really good in my life right now?”
2. Declare how your day will go
You can create happy mornings by understanding the power of your choice.
Instead of being pulled by the day’s demands, while still lying in bed, choose what day you want to have.
You can say things like,
“I choose to have a peaceful day today.”
“I choose to be kind today.”
“Today, I choose to love more.”
“I choose to include everyone today without judgment or differences.”
3. Creating happy mornings through a prayer
Next, get up and sit on your bed. You can also get down on the floor kneeling. I find kneeling on the floor humbling, but sitting on your bed is good enough.
Bring your hands together at your heart center, close your eyes, gently bow your head down, and say a prayer of your choice.
You can say a prayer to your God, Higher intelligence, sending health and happiness to others, or self-assuring affirmation.
Bringing your hands together isn’t only used as a gesture when we pray. When we bring our left and right hand together, we bring our left and right hemispheres of the brain into balance.
4. Create a conducive atmosphere for your sight and smell
What you look at when you wake up matters. Therefore, create a space that’s positive and soothing for your sight. Maybe you place a picture of your loved ones on your bed table or hang a picture of your God on the wall.
You can also get a small vase and put one flower in it by your bed. Waking up with nature by your side it’s refreshing and soothing for your eyes and nose.
If you are experiencing colder weather or feel cold upon awakening, put a pair of cozy socks by your bed to have them handy right when you get up. Last but not least, when you look at your environment and take in the beauty and reverence it offers, give yourself one big smile and move on to your day.
Which one of these happy morning routines is your favorite? I’d love to know. Feel free to leave a comment below.
