5 Ways How to Overcome Fear and Live Your Life Totally
Feeling unease and dissatisfaction in our lives happens when we want to expand and break through our limits but find it challenging to overcome fear.
Although we can settle and try to convince ourselves that where we are is good enough, if many of our dreams and goals (external or spiritual) went unfulfilled, that inner nagging will never entirely go away.
The reason is that your higher self wants to expand and roar, but your mind resists it.
Your mind will always push back the moment you want to grow because growth is unfamiliar, which your mind perceives as dangerous.
Think about it. How often have you thought of some great idea for your business or a trip or some community project, but the moment the initial thoughts of excitement were over, all the reasons as to why you shouldn’t do it creep in?
Although overcoming fearful thoughts requires patience and practice, you can change this psychological process by raising your consciousness and retraining your mind.
Here are 5 ways to overcome fear and live your life totally, without mental boundaries and limits.
1. Get quiet and shut down the noise
Most of your thoughts are recycled and repetitive thinking patterns. Since they are automatic, they can easily slip by you without your awareness.
Think of it like driving a car. When you sat behind the wheel the first time, your senses and awareness were on high alert. Even the music was a distraction since you needed to be extremely focused to prevent an accident.
One year later, you can drive from your work or a local store to your home and not even remember it because your mind become accustomed to the route and the action.
When you learn to sit in silence for some time, you will allow yourself to notice those fearful and disempowering thoughts. This moves me to the next step.
2. Observe
Learn to observe what’s happening inside your head. Especially those moments when you think of something big and exciting, pause and witness your mind. If you can’t pinpoint what you are thinking (which is normal btw) observe your emotions.
If emotions of joy and aliveness switch to those of fear and unease, it is highly possible your mind stepped in and tried to rationalize why you shouldn’t do that great thing that you want to.
When you become an observer of your mind, you create a slight distance between what you think and who you are.
Don’t believe everything you think – observe it.
3. Make a choice to overcome fear
Although you can’t control what’s happening around you, you can choose how to respond. The key word here is choice. You may not like it, it may not be what you wanted, but you still have a choice to choose your response.
To overcome fear, you must make a conscious choice first. What do I mean by that?
When we become fearful or afraid, we justify it with a story. Sometimes, we are in denial altogether.
Unless you make a conscious choice, nothing will change.
To make your commitment to overcoming fear official, write it down in your journal or on a wall in your home. You can also make it a screensaver or, to be classy, use lipstick and put it on your mirror in your bathroom.
Once you consciously choose to overcome fear and not let it stop you, you will send a signal to your brain that you mean business.
4. Get ready for a pushback
Once you choose to grow in any way, you will enter a zone of unfamiliarity and, therefore, a certain discomfort. The moment you do that, your mind will go bananas.
This is a natural reaction of your mind, so there is nothing to worry about.
Here are a few ideas on how to overcome your fear:
- Close your eyes and visualize the end goal of your plan. Feel the emotions this vision brings you and immerse yourself in this experience. When you embrace emotions like hope, love, joy, or excitement, you will raise your vibration and become stronger to fight adversity.
- Get an accountability partner, whether that is your friend, a teacher, or a coach. Find someone serious about holding you accountable and willing to go with you all the way.
- Do something hard with your body. Whether you go for a long run or fast walk, visit the gym, or attend an intense power yoga or Ashtanga class, do something that challenges your physical body. Once you complete the challenge, you send a signal to your brain that you can do hard things and embrace more confidence in your ability to stick to your commitment and overcome fear.
5. Put things into perspective
Wayne Dyer said, “If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”
Let me offer you this.
You aren’t afraid because there is a real danger (assuming you are physically safe since you are reading this). The danger is psychological.
Since you can’t predict what will happen if you choose to overcome your fear and enter the unknown, it creates unease. You fear that whatever is on the other side may be worse than what is there right now. Therefore, you fear suffering.
Let me bold and ask you this: Are you happy with where you are?
If your answer is no (and that’s why you are reading this article), there is some pain, discomfort, or suffering, isn’t it? Maybe it’s pain from staying stuck or living a life you don’t like.
Whatever your reason, you want more, and not having it creates unease and dissatisfaction.
But, if you choose to overcome your fear and act in spite of it, at least you are choosing your discomfort and not settling for it.
You don’t have to agree with me. Just sit with this idea for the next couple of days. Don’t accept or reject it right away. Think about this point of view and the fact that you are already uncomfortable.
Knowing that you have the power of choice, what do you choose, my brave soul?
